-
Kempen JH, O'Colmain BJ, Leske MC, et al., Eye Disease Prevalence Research Group. The prevalence of diabetic retinopathy among adults in the United States. Arch Ophthalmol 2004; 122:552-556. In this study, pooled data from eight population-based studies demonstrated that among an estimated 10.2 million adults 40 years or older known to have diabetes mellitus in the United States, the estimated crude prevalence rates for retinopathy and vision-threatening retinopathy were 40.3% and 8.2%, respectively.
