The Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study: A randomized trial determines that topical ocular hypotensive medication delays or prevents the onset of primary open-angle glaucoma
-
Kass MA, Heuer DK, Higginbotham EJ, et al.: The Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study: a randomized trial determines that topical ocular hypotensive medication delays or prevents the onset of primary open-angle glaucoma. Arch Ophthalmol 2002, 120:701-713. The Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study demonstrated that IOP reduction prevented glaucoma and identified baseline risk factors for developing glaucoma. Based on its findings, patients at higher risk can be identified and treated before glaucoma vision loss ensues.

Acta Ophthalmol Scand 2002, 80:635-641. This trial randomized 226 patients uncontrolled on timolol monotherapy to either latanoprost or dorzolamide-timolol fixed combination and found similar efficacy. Additive intraocular pressure lowering effect of various medications with latanoprost
-
O'Connor DJ, Martone JF, Mead A: Additive intraocular pressure lowering effect of various medications with latanoprost. Am J Ophthalmol 2002, 133:836-837. Although small and retrospective, this analysis demonstrated that dorzolamide lowered IOP more than β-blockers or brimonidine when added to latanoprost. As prostaglandins become mainstream first-line agents, additivity studies such as this will guide future adjunctive therapy choices.
