Diabetologia 1995, 38:387-394. This is an original paper with a thoughtful discussion of various mechanisms for development of diabetic nephropathy, concluding that oxidative stress is not involved. The studies were conducted in streptozotocin-diabetic rats receiving low-level insulin therapy for 8 months, an animal model that may be more relevant to chronic human diabetes than the acute, untreated diabetic rat model.
