For isolated droplets the nucleation of the terrace growth is a rare event. For sufficient droplet density "secondary nucleation" is dominating: a growing terrace front (e.g., in Fig. 1 from the upper left corner) touches the perimeter of a droplet without terrace and triggers the terrace growth. Thus, a single, rare terrace growth event initiates widespread and easily observable terrace growth.
