Using the UNOS database, the authors evaluate MELD as a predictor of pre- and post-transplant survival in UNOS status 1 patients and find that for fulminant hepatic failure (not due to acetaminophen), MELD appears to be predictive of outcome and may be useful in the future in prioritizing these patients.

Trotter J, Osgood M. MELD scores of liver transplant recipients according to size of waiting list: impact of organ allocation and patient outcomes. JAMA 2004; 291:1871-1874. The authors review disparities in transplantation between small and large organ procurement organizations and find that a significantly smaller proportion of adult DDLT recipients in OPOs with small waiting lists receive transplants with MELD scores above 24 as compared with recipients in large OPOs.
