13. In this presentation we use Empetrum or E. nigrum as species level and refer to ssp. nigrum or ssp. hermaphroditum when appropriate. In Europe, the two taxon are generally very similar but separated by three characteristics according to Anderberg (14): E. nigrum ssp. nigrum is diploid, dioecious and more southern in distribution, whereas E. nigrum ssp. hermaphroditum is tetraploid, hermaphrodite and more northern in distribution.
