Epidural analgesia improves outcome after multiple rib fractures
-
Bulger EM, Edwards T, Klotz P, Jurkovich GJ. Epidural analgesia improves outcome after multiple rib fractures. Surgery 2004; 136:426-430. Previous studies demonstrated that for patients with rib fractures epidural analgesia compared with intravenous opioids is associated with improved pain scores and pulmonary function tests. This study shows that epidural analgesia actually improves patient outcomes.

-
Matot I, Oppenheim-Eden A, Ratrot R, et al. Preoperative cardiac events in elderly patients with hip fracture randomized to epidural or conventional analgesia. Anesthesiology 2003; 98:156-163. This carefully conducted study found that the early administration of epidural analgesia reduced the preoperative incidence of adverse cardiac outcomes in patients with fractured hips. This finding indicates the need for further studies with different patient populations.
