28. This was operationalised by searching through the database using a Boolean search with 'NATO Expansion' OR 'NATO Enlargement' AND 'Central Europe' as criteria, or 'EU Expansion' OR 'EU Enlargement' AND 'Central Europe' as criteria.
29. For the purposes of this research, all references to 'Eastern and Central Europe' in the newspapers surveyed were ignored. That term was frequently used by journalists to refer to all of the NATO and EU applicant countries without distinguishing between 'Eastern' and 'Central' Europe. For a newspaper reference to be included in the analysis it had to refer to 'Central Europe' alone.
