    • The direct bromination of neocuproine (1) has been carried out but resulted in a mixture of products containing less than 30% of 5-bromo-2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (4). Due to low solubilities and strong interactions with silica gel this mixture is very difficult to separate.
