    • On rare occasions, spontaneous flow cessation occurs in capillaries. On the approach to flow cessation in these vessels, as lubrication pressure and fluid shear stress on the surface of the red cell diminish, red-cell restoring forces are significant enough to impart progressively increasing deformation on the glycocalyx with decreasing red-cell velocity. This effect is first apparent at red-cell velocities of ∼ 200 μm/ s and becomes most signifi-cant at velocities ≲30 μm/ s sRefs. 1 and 13d

    • It should be noted that, in general, the fluid viscosity in a binary mixture depends upon the solid-volume fraction. However, in passing to the limit of ver y dilute mixtures, where the solid-volume fraction is vanishingly small, the fluid viscosity in the mixture approaches the value in the external bath.
