    • Two-tone suppression experiments [8] suggest that hair cells over the extension of ≈ 650 μ m contribute to active amplification. This would be hardly consistent with the narrow amplifier bandwidth of critical tuning. During nonstationary driving only, μ may cross the critical point, e.g., in order to reduce the response time for follow-up signals.
