2·EtOH (pic = 2-picolylamine). For a long time, this compound was considered to be a unique case because only one iron site and the same space group were detected in the high- and low-temperature phases. The very detailed and accurate structural determination recently reported by Bürgi and co-workers provides new insight into the factors that cause the two-step process. Indeed the spin-crossover transformation was shown to be coupled to two successive order-disorder transitions that leads, in the ordered intermediate phase, to two different iron sites characterized by different spin states.

The spectrum of this compound was also recorded in a Vaseline mull to address the question of a possible alteration of the solid sample dispersed in KBr. The absence of a significant change between the RT (see Figure S1 in the Supporting Information) and also the low-temperature spectra indicates that the solid dispersion into KBr gives rise to minor effects on the molecular properties.
