note
-
Circular dichroism measurements revealed that the six polypeptide analogs described in this study have the same secondary structures when they are dissolved in identical solvents; hence, the environment around the principal chromophore, the pyrene, will not change when the electron donor, tryptophan, is moved along the peptide chain or replaced with phenylalanine. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that electron transfer is the predominant contribution to the changes in the values of non-radiative rate constants in eqn. 3.

note
-
In order for multiple non-radiative or emission rate constants to be measured from an ensemble of conformers, each of the conformers should be 'frozen' for a period longer than the lifetime of the excited state of the chromophore, i.e. the rates of exchange between the different conformers should be slower than the rates of the photophysical processes under observation. Therefore, the multiexponential emission decays measured for the helical polypeptides result from conformational dynamic processes with time constants in the micro- and millisecond domains. The dynamic processes of the polypeptides that occur in the nanosecond and sub-nanosecond time domains will not produce discernible decay rate constants, rather, they will result in a single average rate.
