note
-
R&D intensity is the ratio of R&D expenditures to sales revenue. An increase in R&D intensity could be the result of declining sales revenue with R&D expenditures held constant. Our data indicate that the increase in R&D intensity for FY '97 was primarily due to an increase in R&D expenditures for the 57 companies that responded in both FY '96 and FY '97.

note
-
The results presented in the tables and graphs are arithmetic averages or medians of either reported values or calculated ratios of a particular set of firms, segments or laboratories. In some cases, the averages were determined after "extreme values" were identified and deleted following statistical convention.
