Garibotto G, Sofia A, Robaudo C, et al. Kidney protein dynamics and ammoniagenesis in humans with chronic metabolic acidosis. J Am Soc Nephrol 2004; 15:1606-1615. These workers show that metabolic acidosis inhibits kidney protein degradation in volunteers - an effect that contrasts sharply with the well documented stimulation of degradation in muscle, demonstrating the tissue-specific nature of the response to acidosis.

Acute metabolic acidosis inhibits muscle protein synthesis in rats
-
Caso G, Garlick BA, Casella GA, et al. Acute metabolic acidosis inhibits muscle protein synthesis in rats. Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab 2004; 287:E90-E96. This study examines the in-vivo effect of acute metabolic acidosis on a variety of different tissues in rats. It shows that acute acidosis inhibits protein synthesis and that this effect is specific to skeletal muscle.
