Kalapotharakos VI, Michalopoulou M, Godolias G, et al. The effects of high- and moderate-resistance training on muscle function in the elderly. J Aging Phys Act 2004; 12:131-143. This is a really good study, showing that resistance training at 80% of 1-RM improves strength more than does 60% of 1-RM, Also, it shows that elderly men and women are able to perform high-intensity strength training three times per week for 12 weeks.
