The postoperative normalization of gastrin levels and subsequent resolution of ECL cell hyperplasia emphasizes the importance in the normalization of gastrin in preventing gastric carcinoid tumors.

A study of patients treated with long-acting octreotide who demonstrated a diminished tumor load and decreased ECL cell density, despite continued elevated gastrin levels. This suggests a direct antiproliferative effect of octreotide on ECL cells.
