    • The calculation of the conductance uses a modified Sharvin expression which is based on Weyl's theorem (see e.g. Morse, P.M., Feshbach, H.: Methods of Theoretical Physics (McGraw-Hill, New York, 1953, p. 761), relating the number of transverse states (channels) in the narrowest part of the junction to the corss-sectional area and the circumference of the narrowing. These quantities were estimated from the geometries of atomic wire configurations obtained during the simulation. Due to strong screening in metals the effective potential confining the electrons in the wire is short-ranged (as also found in recent local density functional calculations of metallic wires by R.N. Barnett and U. Landman, ref. 8) approximating well a hard-wall boundary potential, corresponding to the Dirichlet boundary condition used in derivation of the Weyl theorem
