    • (a) In their natural habitat, obligate methanotrophs own their precarious existence to only methane as the source of carbon and energy. However, their ability to form resting bodies (exospores and cysts) enhances their survival in adverse conditions. These resting stages confer resistance to desiccation and heat, and survival in the absence of methane for weeks if not months.
