The laser spot size has been determined by measuring the laser intensity at the sample position as function of the position of a sharp blade shadowing a part of it. The laser spot was taken to be round with a Gaussian intensity distribution. The x-ray illuminated volume accounts for only a fraction of it in the spot center.
