This was a placebo and active-controlled study in 1302 patients, who received either montelukast, loratadine (as active control) or placebo, but without the intention to compare montelukast and loratadine. Montelukast improved daytime and night-time symptoms and quality-of-life parameters and in contrast to loratadine, significantly reduced peripheral blood eosinophil count.

J Allergy Clin Immunol 2001; 108:703-708. Intranasal heparin given before intranasal allergen challenge reduced the symptom score, the eosinophil influx and the amount of eosinophil cationic protein in the nasal wash. However, statistical significance was only reached in some of the measurements.
