Pilot study to explore effects of low-fat, flaxseed-supplemented diet on proliferation of benign prostatic epithelium and prostate-specific antigen. Urology 2004; 63:900-904. This was one of the first ever life-style intervention studies that demonstrated an ability to not only reduce the risk of prostate cancer, but that also improve heart health. In addition, this is a cheap and easy to follow intervention that should be discussed with many patients. Powdered flaxseed and a low-fat diet not only reduce PSA and markers of high-risk prostate cancer, but also significantly reduced cholesterol levels in men.

    • Graaf MR, Beiderbeck AB, Egberts ACG, et al. The risk of cancer in users of statins. J Clin Oncol 2004; 22:2388-2394. One of the largest and best case-control studies suggested that statin use may reduce the risk of cancer by 20%. However, one of the largest reductions in risk was observed for prostate cancer (63% reduction), which again makes statin drugs one of the most ideal chemoprevention agents to test in a future randomized trial.

However, the article is also very objective in its assessment.
