    • A referee points out the possibility that this competing endothermic reaction could reflect a fraction of electronically excited metal ions, and this can certainly not be ruled out This explanation would, however, imply that at least 60% of the metal ions were electronically excited for both Co and Ni, which has not generally been thought to be the case under the long-time-scale ion trapping conditions of ICR experiments.
