The electronic structure of phosphaalkenes has been studied extensively using photoelectron spectroscopy and molecular modeling. The two filled frontier orbitals (the lone pair on phosphorus and the (2p-3p)π bond) are closely spaced in energy, and the order is highly dependent on the nature of the substituants.
