Biological Exuberance
-
Scientists have observed three kinds of sex-changing animals in nature. Freemartins become intersexed when they become associated in utero with an 'opposite' sex twin. Chimeras have organs with genetically female and male elements. Mosaics refer to animals with a mixture of female and male traits, including diverse chromosome configurations in different cells in the body. See Bruce Bagemihl, Biological Exuberance.
