21. ESEM measurements were made at the Force Technology (Copenhagen, Denmark). Pretreated beads of neat polystyrene and of Merrifield resin have been investigated by ESEM. The elemental composition of the bead surface was determined by EDX. In both cases, the elemental composition of the bead surface is identical with the elemental composition of the bridging material between the contact points of adjacent beads (Figure 2c,d). Elemental composition determined (by EDX) of neat polystyrene (bead surface, wt % C 97.5; binding area, wt % C 97.7) and of Merrifield resin (bead surface, wt % C 94.1; Cl 2.2; binding area, wt % C 93.6; Cl 2.6.
