Sec18p (NSF)-driven release of Sec17p (alpha-SNAP) can precede docking and fusion of yeast vacuoles
-
Mayer A, Wickner W, Haas A: Sec18p (NSF)-driven release of Sec17p (alpha-SNAP) can precede docking and fusion of yeast vacuoles. Cell 1996, 85:83-94. NSF and SNAPs are thought to bind to the trimeric complex formed be-tween the plasma membrane proteins syntaxin and SNAP-25 and the vesicle protein synaptobrevin to facilitate vesicle fusion to the target membrane. In contrast to this standard view of NSF acting after docking and priming, in an in vitro assay which studied the fusion of yeast vacuoles with one another the NSF requirement was fulfilled prior to the docking of the two membranes.

Definition of the readily releasable pool of vesicles at hippocampal synapses
-
Rosenmund C, Stevens CF: Definition of the readily releasable pool of vesicles at hippocampal synapses. Neuron 1996, 16:1197-1207. The relationship between the release-ready pool of vesicles identified by application of hypertonic solution and the vesicles that undergo exocytosis in response to nerve impulses is investigated. The same pool of vesicles is shared by both mechanisms.

The small GTP-binding protein Rab3a regulates a late step in synaptic vesicle fusion
-
in press
-
Geppert M, Goda Y, Stevens CF, Sudhof T: The small GTP-binding protein Rab3A regulates a late step in synaptic vesicle fusion. Nature 1997, in press. A potential role of the synaptic vesicle protein rab3A in regulating the amount of synaptic vesicle exocytosis at central synapses is addressed. Lack of rab3A protein leads to a twofold increase in the amount of quantal release whereas the probability of transmitter release remains unaltered.
