Briefly, (CdSe)ZnS core-shell nanodots and nanorods were solubilized in methanol by exchanging surface hydrophobic trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) groups onto hydrophilic cysteine molecules and added to a suspension of polystyrene microspheres in isopropanol:chloroform 10:2 mixture. The suspension was then sonicated in ultrasound bath in order to provoke a more effective penetration of nanocrystals into the swelled surface region of microspheres. Finally, nonattached nanocrystals were washed out by multiple centrifugation/redispersion in fresh portions of isopropanol.

note
-
(CdSe)ZnS nanorods first were solubilized in methanol by exchanging surface hydrophobic TOPO groups onto hydrophilic strongly positively charged 2-(dimethylamino)-ethanethiol hydrochloride molecules. Then, a colloidal solution of positively charged nanorods was added to the suspension of polymeric microspheres in isopropanol and refluxed. Finally, microspheres were removed by multiple centrifugation.
