    • Stem cell homeostasis in the Arabidopsis shoot meristem is regulated by intercellular movement of CLAVATA3 and its sequestration by CLAVATA1
    • Directed expression of CLV3 and CLV1 shows that CLV3 acts non-cell autonomously to repress WUS expression in the upper layers of the shoot apical meristem. In the central zone of the meristem, this effect is limited by sequestration of CLV3 by CLV1. Lack of CLV1 laterally allows the lateral daughter cells to leave the stem cell niche.
