This is a report from the Strong Heart Study showing that non-HDL-C levels independently predict cardiovascular events and, in particular, coronary events among male and female American Indians with diabetes over 9 years of follow-up. Hazard ratios for the highest tertile of non-HDL-C were higher than for LDL-C and triglycerides, and, among women, higher than for the total cholesterol/HDL-C ratio.

Circulation 2002; 106:2537-2542. This is the first report of the prognostic value of non-HDL-C in a cohort of patients with coronary heart disease who were not selected based on specific lipid-entry criteria, thus representing a cross section of typical patients with multi-vessel coronary disease. LDL-C was not a predictor of nonfatal myocardial infarction or angina at 5 years in this cohort.
