A refractive index change Δn = -0.019 would give a value of ΔR/R = -0.007 for an unpattemed planar AlGaAs surface with a refractive index of 3.5 at normal incidence. The value for the photonic crystal would be expected to be smaller due to the smaller fraction of nonlinear material.

This value of Δn is consistent with that observed in bulk GaAs under similar conditions: see Y. H. Lee, A. Chavez-Pirson, S. W. Koch, H. M. Gibbs, S. H. Park, J. Morhange, A. Jeffrey, N. Peyghambarian, L. Banyai, A. C. Gossard, and W. Wiegmann, Phys. Rev. Lett. 57, 2446 (1986).
