The spontaneous emission is determined by the density of states at the position of the emitter. The DOS is the volume average of this local DOS. See also R. Sprik, B.A. van Tiggelen, and A. Lagendijk, Europhys. Lett. 36, 265 (1996).

Note
-
The H-field inverted matrix technique (Refs. 29,30) was used to calculate eigenfrequencies in reciprocal space for several values of n′. The DOS was integrated over the irreducible part of the fcc Brillouin zone with a special point scheme (Ref. 31), in which eigenfrequencies were calculated on a coarse grid of 2540 k points using 725 plane waves. A histogram was made of the eigenfrequencies after interpolation onto a refined grid with doubled spatial resolution to obtain ρ(ω). The DOS for intermediate values of n′ were linearly interpolated between the calculated DOS curves with better than 5% accuracy to obtain a ρ(ω,n′) surface.

Note
-
The reduction of the penetration depth due to other absorption processes such as free-carrier absorption should be small at the intensities and free-carrier densities given. This is shown empirically, for example, from the free-carrier cross sections given in Ref. 33.
