Higher-order correlations, as have been studied in, e.g., Ref. 17, are neglected here. Such effects are important in nonlinear optics for resonant excitation and for special situations in which the Hartree-Fock terms vanish. Thus for the present analysis of the optical Stark effect involving a strongly detuned pump pulse which is linearly polarized in the same direction as the probe, higher-order correlations should be of minor importance.
