Experiences of Dutch families who parent an adopted Romanian child
-
Hoksbergen R, van Dijkum C, Stout Jeskijk F. Experiences of Dutch families who parent an adopted Romanian child. J Dev Behav Pediatr 2002; 23:403-409. The authors report on 83 children, aged 6.8 years, who were adopted from Romanian orphanages at the mean age of 2.9 years. Only 13% were free of psychosocial problems at both assessment times, and the number of difficulties reported at placement predicted nearly 70% of the child's functioning at age 6.8 years.

Attachment disturbances in young children. II: Indiscriminate behavior and institutional care
-
Zeanah CH, Smyke AT, Dumitrescu A. Attachment disturbances in young children. II: Indiscriminate behavior and institutional care. J Am Acad Child Adolesc Psychiatry 2002; 41:983-989. This paper describes a population of institutionalized toddlers who showed a high incidence of attachment disorders. This allowed the authors to both clarify and validate the diagnostic criteria of reactive attachment disorder.

Attachment disturbances in young children. I: The continuum of caretaking casualty
-
Smyke AT, Dumitrescu A, Zeanah CH. Attachment disturbances in young children. I: The continuum of caretaking casualty. J Am Acad Child Adolesc Psychiatry 2002; 41:972-982. The authors assessed 61 Romanian toddlers with a history of lifelong 'regular' or 'pilot' (i.e. less depriving) institutionalization and compared them with 33 matched never-institutionalized toddlers. They found a direct linear relationship between caretaking setting and severity of attachment-disorder symptoms.
