On the other hand, substituents present at the 2 (2′) and 6 (6′) positions of azoarenes can, in principle, cause steric crowding around the interconverting azo group and hence are known to affect the isomerization rates (see, for example, Gegiou, D.; Muszkat, K. A.; Fischer, E. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1968, 90, 3907).
