This was the first study to show that HIV-positive women likely have many more HPV types than commonly recognized using standard HPV detection techniques. While none of these newly described types have been shown to be oncogenic, their role in the pathogenesis of CIN is not known.

    • Strickler H, Palefsky JM, Shah KV, et al.: The weak association of HPV 16 with immune status in HIV-seropositive women. J Natl Cancer Inst 2003 (in press) This paper shows that the relationship between HPV 16 prevalence is not as clearly related to lower CD4+ levels in HIV-positive women as other HPV types. This observation suggests that control of HPV 16 is not as closely tied to immune response as other HPV types and may help to explain why HPV 16 is the most common oncogenic HPV type in the general population of immunocompetent women.
