    • A physical understanding does not often emerge from the mathematics. Rather, it is the other way around, as expressed many times by many persons in the past. For instance, from the well known series, the Feynman Lectures on Physics (Addison-Wesley, Reading, MA, 1964) by R. P. Feynman, Robert B. Leighton, and Matthew Sands, Vol. II, p. 2-1, we paraphrase "A physical understanding is a completely unmathematical, imprecise, and inexacl thing, but is the beginning of every physical theory."

While in one sense a bent bond can be considered "broken," in the context of our paper "bent" implies a much more specific and narrowly defined O⋯O⋯O angular distribution than "broken." "Broken" H-bonds do not occur in the ice polymorphs; "bent" H-bonds do.
