    • Fullerene-vesicle preparation was performed following the earlier published procedure [5]. Conclusive evidence for the successful incorporation of these carbon allotropes into the hydrophobic interior of the artificial bilayer membranes emerge from the following aspects. i) Gel exclusion chromatography on Sephadex G-50 resulted in the homogeneous elution of the colored fullerene vesicle fraction. ii) Due to the insolubility of 1-9 any nonincorporated traces remained at the top of the gel column material. iii) Extraction of membrane-incorporated fullerenes with toluene failed. iv) Induction of osmotic effects via addition of NaCl led to the spontaneous destruction of the artificial bilayer membrane and, in turn, enabled dissolution of 1-9 in toluene.
