    • In 1996, for example, the Israeli supreme court heard a total of 10,529 cases (an increase of more than 80 percent from the total number of cases brought before the court in 1990). Between 1994 and 1999 alone more than 150 petitions were filed in the Israeli supreme court by MKs against decisions of the Knesset itself, the government, and other state authorities.

    • In December 1999 Israel's population was estimated at 6.2 million, of which approximately 5 million (80 percent) were Jews and 1.2 million (20 percent) were non-Jews (mainly Arab-Israelis). Of the Jewish population, approximately 55 percent were Ashkenzi Jews (Jews of mainly European descent), and approximately 45 percent were Mizrahi or Sepharadi Jews (Jews of mainly North African or Asian descent).

    • In 1981 this bloc comprised forty-seven MKs representing the Labor Party, forty-three Likud MKs representing a secular bourgeois policy agenda, three MKs representing CRM/Shinui/Meretz, and two MKs representing the Ometz faction. In 1996 it comprised thirty-four MKs representing the Labor Party, fifteen Likud MKs representing a secular bourgeois policy agenda, nine MKs representing CRM/Shinui/Meretz, and four MKs representing The Third Way. The Labor Party's list for the 1996 general elections included MKs representing policy preferences of Mizrahi Jews in development towns and poor neighborhoods (MKs Ben-Menahem and Peretz), as well as an MK representing the small community of Ethiopian Jews (MK Masalla). But since the Labor Party has long been identified with the policy preferences of the secular Ashkenazi bourgeoisie, I count all Labor's MKs in this category. Seeing these MKs as representing the interests of peripheral groups in the Israeli society would further strengthen my point. Also, the Likud (Union) was established as an alliance between Herut (Freedom), a nationalist party, and the Liberal Party and has had an ideologically diverse group of leaders. Therefore, Likud has always been a very loose alliance between politicians officially committed to different, sometimes opposing policy preferences. The section of Likud that represents, by and large, the policy agenda of the secular right-wing bourgeoisie includes leading figures such as MKs Meridor and Milo (now with the Center Party), Olmert, Livnat, Ha'Negbi, Rivlin, Arens, Linn, Aridor, Erlich, Modai, Nissim, Pat, Shoval, Sharir, Grupper, and Horowitz who represent explicitly secular, neoliberal policy preferences. Most of Likud's dominant figures since the party's establishment have been secular Ashkenazi leaders, including Begin, Shamir, Sharon, and Netanyahu.

    • In 1981 this bloc comprised thirteen MKs representing religious parties (for example, the NRP, Aguda parties, Shas, and Tami); three MKs representing extreme right-wing parties (for example, Tehiya); four MKs representing Arab and Communist lists; and five Likud MKs identified primarily with the Mizrahi Jews' policy agenda. In 1996 this bloc comprised twenty-three MKs representing religious parties (the NRP, Aguda parties and Shas); ten MKs representing extreme right-wing parties (Tzomet and Moledet); nine MKs representing Arab and Communist lists; seven MKs representing immigrant lists (Israel Ba'Alia); and nine Likud MKs identified primarily with the Mizrahi Jews' policy agenda (this category includes Likud Knesset members explicitly identified with the policy preferences of residents of development towns and poor neighborhoods such as the Levi-Magen faction, which was established in the mid 1980s and left the Likud in 1995 to form Gesher). Even if Tzomet (which combines extreme right-wing views regarding the peace process with a secularist agenda) is classified as belonging to the bloc representing established interests and constituencies, the decline in the relative power of these interests is still significant, from ninety-five MKs in 1981 to sixty-eight MKs in 1996.

    • While most upper middle class Mizrahi Jews have been voting Likud for the past twenty-five years, poor Mizrahi Jews have increasingly been shifting their vote to Gesher and Shas.
