Two propofol formulations are equivalent in small children aged 1 month to 3 years
-
Pessenbacher K, Gutmann A, Eggenreich U, et al. Two propofol formulations are equivalent in small children aged 1 month to 3 years. Acta Anaesthesiol Scand 2002; 46:257-263. This well-performed study scientifically documented that both formulations have equivalent clinical effects. The study also determined the dose requirements for infants and small children aged 1 month to 3 years and demonstrated that the propofol requirements for anaesthesia are reduced when opioids are co-administered in this age group.

Is propofol safe for procedural sedation in children? A prospective evaluation of propofol versus ketamine in pediatric critical care
-
Vardi A, Salem Y, Padeh S, et al. Is propofol safe for procedural sedation in children? A prospective evaluation of propofol versus ketamine in pediatric critical care. Crit Care Med 2002; 30:1231-1236. Whereas the title refers to sedation, the abstract describes that drugs were administered 'to achieve the desired level of anaesthesia'. As many of the procedures were painful (e.g. bronchoscopy) large propofol doses were necessary, resulting in a high incidence of adverse effects.

-
Simon L, Boucebci KJ, Odiaguet G, et al. A survey of practice of tracheal intubation without muscle relaxant in paediatric patients. Paediatr Anaesth 2002; 12:36-42. This was a large study of 502 paediatric tracheal intubations without muscle relaxants, comparing sevoflurane and propofol. In spite of high propofol doses (6.3 mg/kg, SD 2.7 mg/kg) good intubating conditions were obtained in only 71%, in contrast to sevoflurane (97%).
