    • 4Sn is completely ineffective in catalyzing the metathesis polymerization of 1,2,3,4,5-pentaphenylsilolyl-1-acetylene, a silole-containing monoyne congener of diyne 2.

    • note
    • Large free volumes can be readily created during the packing process of stiff polyacetylene chains. For example, upon staticcasting a solution of poly(1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne), the stiff polyene rods randomly stack to give thin films with numerous nanosized voids. The torturous channels formed by the interconnection of the nanovoids allow small molecules to pass through, making the polymer films highly permeable. Indeed, poly(1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne) is one of the best gas-and liquid-permeating materials.
