Personal communication with Gary Yellen of Harvard Medical School, and the observation that IAA blocks glycolysis in intact yeast and animal cells (F.L. Holmes, Hans Krebs the formation of a scientific life 1900-1933, Oxford University Press, 1991) which suggests that IAA is membrane-permeable. IAA inactivates the enzyme glyceraldehyde phosphate dehydrogenase by modifying a cysteine residue at the active site (A.L. Lehninger, Principles of Biochemistry, Worth Publishers, Inc., 1982).
