Memory in multiple sclerosis: Contextual encoding deficits
-
Thornton AE, Raz N, Tucker KA. Memory in multiple sclerosis: contextual encoding deficits. J Int Neuropsychol Soc 2002; 8:395-409. This study addressed the debate regarding encoding versus retrieval deficits in multiple sclerosis. The authors systematically examined these components of memory by evaluating the efficacy of encoding under varied conditions.

Autobiographical memory in advanced multiple sclerosis: Assessment of episodic and personal semantic memory across three time spans
-
Kenealy PM, Beaumont JG, Lintern TC, Murrell RC. Autobiographical memory in advanced multiple sclerosis: assessment of episodic and personal semantic memory across three time spans. J Int Neuropsychol Soc 2002; 8:855-860. The results of this study suggested that 60% of the multiple sclerosis sample showed deficits in autobiographical memory, with a level of impairment associated with general cognitive ability. Episodic features of autobiographical information were more susceptible to decline than semantic autobiographical information.

Information processing characteristics in subtypes of multiple sclerosis
-
de Sonneville LM, Boringa JB, Reuling IEW, et al. Information processing characteristics in subtypes of multiple sclerosis. Neuropsychologia 2002; 40:1751-1765. This study presented data regarding processing speed across subtypes of multiple sclerosis. Results suggested that multiple sclerosis patients are 40% slower than control subjects on tasks of processing speed. Patients with progressive course were significantly slower than those with relapsing - remitting course.
