    • The derivation of this functional is far from trivial. Ideally one should constrain the interface, away from its equilibrium flat position, in the configuration h(x) and, using the microscopic Hamiltonian, take a partial trace over the bulk variables. Note also that the displacement model assumes the existence of an interface and thus is only valid below the bulk critical temperature, where distinct "liquid" and "gas" phases are defined.
