Viral etiology of frequently recurring respiratory tract infections in children
-
Nokso-Koivisto J, Pitkaranta A, Blomqvist S, et al. Viral etiology of frequently recurring respiratory tract infections in children. Clin Infect Dis 2002; 35:540-546. In both children with frequent recurring upper respiratory tract infections and those with isolated, less frequent infections, the most common pathogens were rhinoviruses. However, an agent was not discovered in nearly half of all cases of upper respiratory tract infection.

Analysis of the genomic sequence of a human metapneumovirus
-
van den Hoogen BG, Bestebroer TM, Osterhaus AD, Fouchier RA. Analysis of the genomic sequence of a human metapneumovirus. Virology 2002; 295:119-132. Genetic similarities and distinctions between hMPV and other paramyxoviruses such as avian pneumovirus and RSV are established. The genome sequence and organization of hMPV is most closely related to those of avian pneumovirus.

Virological features and clinical manifestations associated with human metapneumovirus: A new paramyxovirus responsible for acute respiratory-tract infections in all age groups

Boivin G, Abed Y, Pelletier G, et al. Virological features and clinical manifestations associated with human metapneumovirus: a new paramyxovirus responsible for acute respiratory-tract infections in all age groups. J Infect Dis 2002; 186:1330-1334. hMPV was identified retrospectively in 37 patients including infants and adults. The clinical features associated with hMPV are described. Phylogenetic analysis of hMPV isolates suggests two genetically distinct lineages.
