    • Our assumption for normalization was that the main source of carbon in the nanorods spectra was due to residual AOT. After Shirley background subtraction, we normalized the spectra of the nanorods and AOT relative to the integral under the C 1s peak. To check our assumption, we normalized the two spectra relative to the integral under S 2p peak, too. We obtained the same result with both normalization procedures.
