    • Because of the prevailing electrostatics, tunneling barriers are much wider in the vertical direction than in the x-y plane. Consequently even though potential maxima in z-direction may be comparable in magnitude to the height of in-plane "saddles", tunnelling along z does not contribute significantly to the overall rate (eq 6) for any of the isomers studied.
