Savani RC, Godinez RI, Godinez MH, et al.: Respiratory distress after intra-tracheal bleomycin: selective deficiency of surfactant proteins B and C. Am J Physiol Lung Cell Mol Physiol 2001, 281:L685-696. Provides experimental evidence of surfactant protein down regulation with acute lung injury and demonstrates recovery of surface properties, as measured in vitro, after the addition of exogenous SP-B.

Wiswell TE, Knight GR, Finer NN, et al.: A multicenter, randomized, controlled trial comparing Surfaxin (Lucinactant) lavage with standard care for treatment of meconium aspiration syndrome. Pediatrics 2002, 109:1081-1087. One of the first reports of Surfaxin® use in human infants. Although hampered by small numbers, the study does demonstrate a trend toward amelioration of the severity of respiratory failure after Surfaxin® therapy.
