Cell Microbiol 2001, 3:623-632. Following from the observation that B. henselae- infected Ea.hy 926 cells release vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in quantities supporting endothelial proliferation, the authors proposed a paracrine angiogenic loop model of Bartonella-triggered angioproliferation. These in vitro data are supported by the histochemical demonstration of increased VEGF levels in bacillary angiomatosis and bacillary peliosis lesions.

A mouse implantation model for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-secreting melanoma cells was shown to develop neoplastic lesions in liver strongly resembling bacillary peliosis hepatis caused by B. henselae in human liver. This observation supports a VEGF-mediated paracrine loop model of Bartonella-triggered angioproliferation.

This study demonstrates the activation of nuclear transcription factor NFκB and the resulting proinflammatory phenotype of endothelial cells upon infection by B. henselae. The cell adhesion molecule ICAM-1 and E-selectin are upregulated concomitant to increased polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) rolling and adhesion to the infected endothelium.

The inhibition of host cell apoptosis is a common strategy of pathogens able to cause chronic infection. This study demonstrates for the first time the capacity of B. henselae to rescue endothelial cells from triggered apoptosis.

Schulein R: The VirB/VirD4 type IV secretion system of Bartonella is essential for establishing intraerythrocytic infection. Mol Microbiol 2002, 46:1053-1067. Using a novel allelic exchange method established for generic use in bartonellae, this study identified the type IV secretion system VirB as the first bona fide pathogenicity factor of the genus Bartonella. Although essential for establishing intraerythroytic infection in the reservoir host, the cell types targeted by the VirB secretion machinery are presently unknown.
