*Yki-Jarvinen H, Koivisto VA, Ylikahri R, Taskinen MR. Acute effects of ethanol and acetate on glucose kinetics in normal subjects. Am J Physiol 1988; 254:E175-E180. The basal rates of both glucose production and utilization are maximally inhibited by small doses of ethanol(4 mmol/l), whereas inhibition of insulin stimulated glucose disposal requires a moderate ethanol dose (14 mmol/l). BMJ 1995; 310:560-564. Large prospective study (n = 7 735) which had the advantage of having a reasonable number of subjects (> 10%) that consumed alcohol at the higher end of the drinking spectrum (i.e. > 48 g/day). Used occasional drinkers as the reference group to identify a nonlinear relation between alcohol intake and diabetes, with the lower risk among moderate drinkers (18-48 g/day).

*Rimm EB, Chan J, Stampfer MJ, Colditz GA, Willett WC. Prospective study of cigarette smoking, alcohol use, and the risk of diabetes in men. BMJ 1995; 310:555-559. Prospective study (n = 1429) which had 3.5% of subjects drinking more than 50 g alcohol per day. Compared with abstainers, men who drank 30-49.9 g of alcohol per day had a reduced risk of diabetes. Trend for inverse association between alcohol and diabetes was maintained when ex-drinkers that had dramatically reduced their alcohol intake were excluded from the reference group.
